Wojciech Chałupka was born in Kluczbork on 18 April 1999. He started his education in Gminna Szkola Muzyczna in his hometown in the saxophone class of Szymon Binek. In 2012 he became a student of Prof. Bernard Steuer in POSM II st. im. Karola Szymanowskiego in Katowice. In 2017 Wojciech moved to Warsaw, where he has started learning with Prof. Pawel Gusnar and Dr Alicja Wolynczyk in Ogolnoksztalcaca Szkola Muzyczna II st. im. Zenona Brzewskiego. After one year he started studying at the Fryderyk Chopin University in Warsaw in the saxophon class of Pawel Gusnar and composition class of Dr Dariusz Przybylski. Since 2019 Wojciech is a student of Prof. Lars Mlekusch in Zürcher Hochschule der Künste (ZHdK).
As the young artist of saxophone and composition he has been a prize winner of 36 different music compositions, including: Grand Prix at the National Competition of the Center for Artistic Education in the saxophone category, 1st prize at the ‘International Music Competition Kaunas Sonorum 2017’ in Kaunas, 2nd prize and Gold Award at the ‘Emona Festival 2018’ in Ljubljana, 1st prize at the International Saxophone Competition in Wrocław and the Gold Medal and Special Award at the International Wind Instruments Competition ‘Finalis 2017’ in Bialystok. Recently Wojciech Chalupka has been giving many concerts. He has already performed at the National Radio Symphony Orchestra Concert Hall in Katowice, the Polish Radio Concert Studio Witold Lutosławski in Warsaw, the Silesian Philharmonic Henryk Górecki in Katowice and the Royal Castle in Warsaw. As a soloist he has performed with the Silesian Philharmonic Orchestra, the Prince’s Salon Orchestra of the Książ Castle and the Warsaw String Orchestra of Zenon Brzewski.
As a composer, Wojciech won 1st prize at the 4th Polish Composers Competition ‘Moja(mi)nuta’ in Łódź. He was a participant in the 3rd Edition of the ‘Music of Our Times’ programme. Recently he has been awarded at the 3rd Asia Pacific Saxophone Academy Composition Competition in Bangkok.
Wojciech is very active as a chamber musician. He created a duo with his brother, accordionist Przemyslaw Chalupka. As a duo they perform mainly their own transcriptions and new Polish music. They were awarded, a.o. 1st prize at the International Accordion Competition in Klingenthal (2019), 1st prize at the International Accordion Competition in Vilnius (2019) and 1st prize at the International Accordion Competition in Pula (2019). As a part of various chamber groups Wojciech was awarded, a.o. Grand Prix at the CEA National Chamber Bands Competition (2018, Toruń), Grand Prix at the CEA National Wind Chamber Ensembles Competition (2016, Kielce) and the 1st prize at the National Chamber Ensembles Competition in Wrocław (2017).
In 2018 and 2016, he received a scholarship from the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage for artistic achievements. He became a scholarship holder of the Young Poland program of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, Jolanta Kwaśniewska’s Foundation ‘Communication without Barriers’, the ‘Work of the New Millennium’ Foundation and the National Children’s Fund.
During the “XVIII World Saxophone Congress” in Zagreb Wojciech Chalupka presented his original project ‘New Polish Saxophone Music’, where he performed his own compositions with company of Pawel Gusnar. He was a participant in ‘Young Musician of the Year’ organized by TVP Kultura, MKiDN and IMiT.
